First Snow Hits Resorts For 2010 Season

First snow hits resorts

Victoria had its first decent snowfalls overnight more than five weeks out from the ski season.

A warm autumn day with temperatures in the low to mid-20s gave way to a cold change late yesterday with snow falling on Alpine peaks.

The most snow recorded was at Mt Buller, with the resort saying it had a cover of up to 3cm of snow on Wednesday morning.

The actual amount of snow that fell would have been more than that, but ground temperatures were still warm from record high temperatures in April and most snow quickly melted,

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Scott Williams said.
"You need that ground sub-soil to drop by a few degrees and get follow-up snow before you get a nice cover," he said.
"The first snowfall of the season usually melts in a couple of days."

Snow also fell at Falls Creek and Mt Baw Baw with Mt Hotham getting a small amount.

The 2010 ski season starts on Saturday, June 12 on the Queens Birthday long weekend.
A dusting of snow fell on April 11 but melted almost immediately.
